SAMH produce a seasonal magazine called The Point. It claims to be an Alternative Voice on Mental Health Issues and always carries several articles that are well worth a read.

Their Winter 2009 issue has an article about the Suicide Prevention work led by the Scottish Government and Choose Life. Of particular note is SAMH’s decision to bring back their publication “After a Suicide”. It has been revised, updated and republished with help from Choose Life and can be downloaded from http://www.samh.org.uk. Alternatively, you can request a print version by phoning 0800 917 3466.

Wired

A second article in this edition looks at some individuals use of the internet to help both themselves and others get through the turmoil of mental health difficulties. A couple of the blogs they refer to were already in our links library, but now I’ve added a couple more!

If you read / write a blog or website you’d like others to know about, please let us know. Either add a comment below or get in touch via our Contact Page.

* The Point is published quarterly by SAMH. You can read it online via their website. http://samh.org.uk

I couldn’t resist a comment on a foodie theme that has emerged in the popular press over the last few weeks.

The NHS Choices website has published an article referring to pieces in the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph both extolling the benefits of salt as a treatment for Depression. The Mail’s article goes into a bit more detail than the Telegraph’s but it’s probably the NHS site that explains the theory the best.

What the NHS missed though was an article in the MIrror. They published an article in February listing 1o Top Tips for dealing with Paranoid Psychosis. Number 4? Eat more Lettuce! Apparently it contains a Morphine like substance that aids sleep.

The NHS Choices website has reported on a Mindfulness story from the Daily Mail in their weekly round up. The article gives a concise description of what Mindfulness is plus an explanation of the science involved. There is some critism of the way a recent research article was reported. This appears to be fair since there were reports of Mindfulness being ‘As good as medication’ and there were comparisons made with Buddist Meditation.

The study referred to does not directly test the efficacy of Mindfulness compared to medication. It looked at relapse rates and compared the use of Mindfulness along with medication. The results showed that people treated with Mindfulness were less likely to relapse compared to people that had only been treated with tablets.

Although Mindfulness uses Meditative techniques, it does not have any particular links to religion.
